Pregnant women are smug - apparently

A friend shared a funny music video with me the other day. It was the first time I had heard of the two girls singing in it, but it seems they have a lot of funny songs on the net, and established comedy careers under the name of Garfunkle and Oates.

This particular song is dedicated to all the pregnant women out there and is an amusing rant about how smug you are! Well, what's not to be smug about? Anyway, instead of me trying to describe it, why don't you have a listen right now. NB: The language is slightly strong at times, but nothing too shocking...

Do you need maternity clothes when you are pregnant, or will a normal but larger shirt do the job?

A plus-size shirt is big all over. Big arm and neck holes. Big across the chest and also the waist. A maternity cut shirt is designed specifically for the shape of a pregnant woman. In other words, it’s bigger across the belly. So a pregnant woman would buy a maternity shirt in pretty much the same size she bought clothes before she was pregnant. If she doesn’t normally wear plus-size tops, it might feel a bit like ‘wearing a tent’ just to get something that will accommodate her widening womb.

Having said that, maternity shirts may not be needed for the first and second trimesters. It’s in the third trimester that the belly really starts to noticeably protrude. And so can the belly button, which can really become an outie.

Every pregnancy is different though. So the best guide to when to start wearing maternity clothes is ‘when you want to.’

If you’re buying from a local shop, you can wait until your current wardrobe starts getting too tight or uncomfortable, then select the best items for your shape, size and the season on the spot.
